Watching Fireflies

Watching Fireflies
2006

Sitting on the side step
watching fireflies
weave day into night
I follow their flickering light
across cane and cotton
searching for a mate
and the last blackbirds
paired or in threes
sometimes alone
disappear
into the sinking sun
and for a brief moment
silence
proclaims night
and I wonder
if you’re still alive
preparing to journey south
before winter storms
transform day to night.
