For Taava
2002

I had forgotten the pain
that churns my stomach
and shortens the breath of life.
That beats the heart
to a different rhythm
and steals the mind for itself.

I had forgotten the pain.
The tightening chest
and burning throat.
Swallowing knots of doubt
to whisper against your ear.

I had forgotten the pain
that cast our worlds together
then scattered us north and south.
That command my dreams
to bring you near
and then to disappear.
